Committee in Solidarity with the Ukrainian People and Russian Opponents of the War

ENGLISH BELOW

12 octobre 2026

12 October 2026

As soon as Trump returned to power in early 2025, we knew that his main objective was Ukraine’s capitulation in the fight it has been waging for over four years against the Russian aggressor – a capitulation accompanied, if possible, by lucrative benefits for Putin, Trump and their respective henchmen. However, the Ukrainian resistance has proved more resilient than expected, managing to do without the support previously provided by the United States thanks to its own arms production and the development of new tactics that now enable it to strike deep into Russian territory.

Faced with these Ukrainian successes and the increasingly tangible effects they are having on the Russian population itself (strikes on major Russian cities, even though they do not target civilians, shortages of all kinds, etc.), Putin has had to remind his lackey in the White House – namely the President himself – of his presence, asking him to crush this resistance.

The latter duly complied, proving once again his servility towards the Kremlin leader, first by promising to buy gas from him, and then by asserting that Zelensky must go. Let us gloss over the grotesque pretext of elections, given the respect Trump shows for them in his own country (from the failed coup of 6 January 2021 to the current manoeuvres aimed at rigging the November vote), not to mention the fact that he, conversely, gets on very well indeed with a tyrant – Putin – who has not faced a genuine election for over two decades.

This sudden direct US aid comes at just the right moment for a Putin in trouble, as Ukrainian popular and military resistance has exposed the weakness of a Russian army, industry and economy incapable of defeating an adversary that was initially infinitely less powerful and better equipped. Had his American and European allies decided to fully support Kyiv – rather than merely half-heartedly – from the very first days of the Russian aggression, the war would probably be over by now, and Putin would have been ousted, his power resting largely on waging a succession of wars against his neighbours. A single defeat would be enough to force him from the scene. In this matter, timidity will come at a very high cost, particularly to Europe.

Let us be clear: the shift in alliances, confirmed by Trump’s latest posturing, puts Ukraine in a precarious position. The situation is grave and the available options are becoming increasingly scarce – and, in some cases, tragic. It is now upon Europe – and we cannot stress enough that Switzerland is part of it – that the hopes of the Ukrainian people rest. For more than four and a half years, the men and women fighting on the front line have been doing so for democracy on the continent and throughout the world. Now is not the time to abandon them, for their defeat will also be ours, throughout Europe.
