There is growing solidarity with the Russian activist Boris Kagarlitsky who is serving a five-year sentence for “apology for terrorism.” Some Russian and western ENSU supporters participate in the coordination of the solidarity campaign, alongside other Russian and western leftists and the Kagarlitsky family.
Many Ukraine solidarity activists don’t trust Boris Kagarlitsky because he supported earlier Russian aggression in Ukraine and Georgia. However, ENSU recognises that Kagarlitsky is opposed to the full-scale invasion. He has also condemned Russia’s increasing authoritarianism, corruption and anti-social policies. ENSU wants Russian troops out of all of Ukraine. We wouldn’t agree with Kagarlitsky if he only advocated for Russian troops to return to their February 2022 positions, and for UN peacekeepers to protect indefinite Russian civil administration in Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea.
However, we believe that a Ukrainian victory will helped by the release of all Russian anti-war activists, irrespective of their past positions.
